Snow Business

Do you know everything about the latest technology in the media world? Channel 4 News present Jon Snow recently visited Coventry Cathedral to give a talk about ‘Who would be a Journalist in the 2nd decade of the 21st century?’

At the age of 9 Jon was taken to Coventry by his father, who was a cleric. Snow’s father wanted Jon to experience and witness the devastation of the war and how it affected Coventry. Snow described what he saw was “Just an open space where the Cathedral had been”. The visit to the bomb sight was what started Jon Snow’s fixation of war.

Vice chancellor Prof. Madeleine Atkins described Snow’s journalistic style as “honest and open minded”.

“An extraordinary experience for human kind” was how Jon portrayed being a journalist in this century. The general public now have the ability to “pick and mix” the information they read. Netbooks and mobile phones are a number of new technologies that allow us to access news quickly and on the go.

More news sights becoming subscription only, does Snow feel we really should pay for news? Yes he does. John said: “People will pay for high quality news”.

Though this easy access to news on the internet does come with down sides, John said that “the digital revolution is not without doubts”. He believes that the media should be regulated closer than it is at the moment.

Jon Snow’s talk was not without a little bit of controversy as he admitted that:

"The BBC is a remarkable news source”.

When asked if he would ever work for the BBC, his answer was simply no.

Journalism student Gemma-Louise Johnson attended the talk.

“I’ve admired John’s work for ages, so it was great to hear some stories and tips from the man himself.,”

It is obvious that we are now moving into the golden age for news.
