Ever looked at wrestling stars such as Hulk Hogan or John Cena and wished you could be just like them? Well now you can. There are two wrestling schools in Coventry, one called Phoenix Wrestling and the other called Slam wrestling.
Slam wrestling is part of a national chain; the Coventry school was the.... school to open in UK. It is based in Body FX gym in Jackson Road, Coventry. It is run by head coach Max Nero. They train every Saturday from 1pm till 4pm and sessions cost £10. As well as training people to become wrestlers they also put their talent to use by touring the country. Ticket prices start from £7.50 for children and £10 for adults. In May Coventry Slam will celebrate its 1st birthday.
Phoenix Wrestling is also based in Coventry however it is not part of a chain like Slam wrestling is. The wrestling school not only trains up young people they also perform shows as well. They take place at Hagard Community Centre in Willenhall, tickets are £5 for adults and £3 for children. As if that wasn’t good value, a family ticket which consists of two adults and three children is only £15.
Going to local wrestling shows is not only good fun because you can get up close and personal to amazing athletes and acrobats, you are also supporting your local community and local heroes. Local wrestling fan Joe Mills knows all about community wrestling:
"Going to local wrestling shows is good because you are a lot closer to the action than at a WWE event. Also, the wrestlers generally work harder because they only perform at the weekends in most cases whereas a WWE wrestler has to make their body hold out for 5 or 6 matches a week.
Local shows are also fun because the opportunity is there to meet some of the wrestlers, and you never know who might end up going on to bigger things. WWE's Daniel Bryan had a match here in Coventry about a year ago for example."
On top of local wrestling schools performing, many wrestling companies bring their shows to the West Midlands. Joe Mills explains:
“As for shows, the next local one is FWA Battle Lines on the 21st March in Wolves. FWA are the biggest and most professional company in Britain and their main event is FWA champ Martin Stone vs. Leroy Kincaide.
Then AMP Wrestling has a show in Willenhall on Saturday the 3rd April. Then the day after, Triple X are doing a show at the Jolly Beggar Club near the Skydome, with former World of Sport star Johnny Kidd vs. Zack Sabre Jr. Sabre is one of the most promising UK stars going, the guy is a phenomenon so that show is worth checking out”.
Wrestling allows people to get fit and channel their anger. It also allows people to express their hidden theatrical side. So why not give it a go? You never know where it might take you.
