Would you know what to do in an emergency? Students doing Paramedic science are hoping to achieve this goal by completing two years of training here at Coventry University. To help them in their studies the school of health and life sciences have bought an ambulance.
The paramedic clinical skills instructor for the university, Mark Garratt said:
“We like to give our paramedic students the kind of training they can use in real-life situations but going out with an ambulance crew is not always possible.”
To overcome this dilemma, the university have bought an old ambulance that once belonged to the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Ambulance service. However this vehicle was in need of a little ‘tender loving care’ of its own. Having had a run in with a brick wall, only the back of the ambulance is still intact. Though this is perfect for paramedic science students as the body of the ambulance is all they require for training.
First year paramedic science student Mike Kirk said:
“I think that having a mock up ambulance within the health and life sciences faculty is really cool. I think it is important for the faculty to have all of the equipment available to enable tutors to fully teach all the skills necessary, not just look at the theory of a procedure or scenario”.
Garratt added:
“I think we are probably the first University in the UK with its own ambulance.”
